Technicolor Dream Coat – Part 1

The timeless beauty and elegance of this Balenciaga floral twill immediately captured my attention. This purchase from Mood, diverged from my usual preferences to dead-stock or remnants. I was drawn to its luxurious appeal and versatile charm. The intricate floral motifs and rich color palette exuded a sense of romance and sophistication that aligned perfectly with my personal style aesthetic. I was drawn to the fabric’s versatility, envisioning it being transformed into a variety of garments and accessories that would elevate any ensemble.

Embarking on my first idea in this jacket project using my sloper was a risk. I opted for a stunning stretch denim from Promenade Fine Fabrics, New Orleans, drawn to its luxurious texture and rich indigo hue. I eagerly began drafting, anticipating the blend of comfort and style that would emerge with each stitch, marking the beginning of a creative journey filled with excitement and possibility. I love the way this came out, preferring to style it open with a simple jersey mock-turtle neck dress, perfect for spring. However, it wasn’t quite the style I was looking for, not enough surface area to show off the bold floral print…back to the drawing board.

Turning to Cochenille design software, I embarked on drafting an alternative jacket, infusing it with my creative vision. Opting for raglan sleeves and a whimsical circle skirt for added fullness, the design took shape seamlessly. Cochenille’s intuitive tools enabled exploration of new silhouettes and design options. With each click and adjustment, the garment evolved, promising a unique fusion of classic elegance and contemporary flair. However, it needed some adjustments for fit and to smooth out the sharp neckline curve at the shoulder point. These I did by making corrections by cutting, slashing and smoothing out curved in pencil.
